This was the 110kms Maya jungle hike to the El Mirador archeological site and how we quickly got involved in the politics of a small Guatemalan village and why we had to hide from the police in the jungle. Also there are photos from Grandest Maya Tikal and sleepy Laguna Lachua, all in Guatemala, a beautiful country.

New in Guatemala and we have got to learn the rules. We descend on Lake Atitlan and segregated, inundated San Pedro, also climb the volcano to understand. Chichicastenango teaches some old Maya beliefs, after 500 years it seems The Christ loses out to his rival or compatriot Maximon. In Todos Santos and high up the Evangelicals sing, while drugs go their own paths.

Chiapas, Mexico: This was the biggest adventure with the boys, driving the Lacandon jungle, getting the van stuck twice, venturing on those far-out corners near the Guatemalan border, those bad roads from Guadalupe Tepeyac to La Realidad to San Quentin and out to Ocosingo, Zapatista territories, where we meet the most hospitable people and one stupid stubborn drunk soldier who threatens. Before the nicest and greatest Palenque, after cold and wet San Cristobal.

My camera breaks down, we attend a few days of fiesta mexicana in Rio Lagartos with all the luna park, dancing and table dancing, ranchera combos and bullfights. We spend time on white Colorada beach and ride out on a boat one early morning to watch flamingos at sun-up. The boys and I have found to a crazy and wonderful summer way of life.

Scratching head in Israel and Palestine, Hebron the divided city, Jerusalem golden, holy and mad at once. Where will it all lead to? Thoughts while in the holy lands, the killing fields of thousands of years.

Cairo is chaotic, traffic, donkeys, shit. Cats in packs of ten chase each other through the garbage; dust and flies go up in clouds. The dirty coffee/tea houses disseminate the sweet odours of the shisha (water pipe, nargile) smokers, the domino players look up, the constant welcome, the constant hassle for a 1 E£ tea, which I can laugh at. It is 5, all is a bit misty, dusty; I clean my glasses, the view remains misty, the dust is in the air. The dust remains on the ground, sweeping means sweeping paper, plastic, food remains, larger bits like cans but never dust, the dust is at best spread out. Seen this many times!

I follow those, slowly up, quiet, the torches fall behind, I keep the ass of the camel in front. More camels make up on us. So have 2 in front 3 behind. And then when one step starts following the other, the routine has set in and I nearly have fallen asleep disaster strikes.

The Siq at 7.30, have it totally for me and the quiet engulfs, no rush, no one behind, no one in front, I can even spend time looking up. A flock of pigeons shriek and change sides between the tops of the canyon. The Siq makes it all more magical then it already is, it is this slowly approaching to the unknown, mystical that builds expectations.
